Coaching is like having a manager, mentor, personal trainer and sports coach all rolled into one. It’s like having a mentor to really believe in you and help you set bigger goals for yourself, a manager to break down the goals into logical bits, a personal trainer to keep you on track and a sports coach to give you feedback to help you improve your game.
A coach works with you one-one-one or in teams, usually over a six month period. You meet in person or over the phone for one hour a week. These regular sessions keep you motivated, make you feel supported and keep you on track to achieving your goals.
Having a coach is like having a mentor, someone who believes in you and helps you create a big vision for yourself. For example, a client had thought about setting up a business for 5 years. With the help of a coach, he had it up and running in 12 weeks. Having someone who believed in him made all the difference.
A coach is like a manager who helps you work out strategies for doing work, sets deadlines and monitors your progress.
For example, a client wanted to spend more time with his partner. Part of the strategy was to find ways to spend more time with her.He did this and was feeling the positive benefits almost immediately.
A coach also helps keep you focused on your goals, a bit like having a personal trainer. With a personal trainer you may swim 30 laps 3 times a week. Without one, you may only swim occasionally. It’s the same with a coach.
For example, one of our clients started writing a book and never finished. With a coach, she wrote 2 chapters every week and finished the book in three months.
You might have great goals and know how to achieve them in principle but not quite be getting there. So a business coach is also like a sports coach. They can see things to improve your game that you can’t. One small correction to your tennis grip could improve your whole game.
For example a client complained that his business had never grown. The coach pointed out that he never spent any time in the week looking for new business. The result of this insight was a dramatic increase in sales during the coaching series.
